The Real Pet Cemetery

Um, er, I just read the horrible story about pet massacres in Puerto Rico. You might think “pet massacres” is a trifle melodramatic, but read the story. Holy shit. All this after Anne and I picked up information at lunch today about volunteering at our local animal shelter. I mean wow.

Speaking of Anne and animals..did you know that sometimes when she is feeling low she turns on sad music and reads listings for dogs that need adoption? And then cries and cries and cries? Erm. And did you know that Peta, the well meaning but sometimes slightly over zealous animal rights organization, DO NOT SUPPORT no kill shelters. I found this surprising, most because I don’t think of PETA as the most rational of groups. But I discovered a new found respect for them. “No kill” shelters might seem all warm and fuzzy, but they don’t really solve the animal control problem. It’s like Bob Barker used to say at the end of every Price Is Right: “Have your pet spayed or neutered!”

Of course, Bob and Peta would probably be very very upset at the idea of stuffing dogs into bags and throwing them off bridges as a means of euthanasia, especially because they don’t die immediately.

“One dog, stuffed in a sack, was found recently at the Cayey site among other bagged carcasses. It apparently survived the fall and managed to poke its head out of the bag before dying, said Carmen Cintron, who runs an animal shelter.”
