My cat, Boots. No way would I poke her full of needles for some other nameless cat.
When your pet has to have an op, you’re only too aware of the dangers. It’s hard to operate on animals because they’re smaller, more fiddly, and they can’t tell you where it hurts, plus if they start bleeding, there’s no back up pet blood bank to draw upon. Some people seem to think that it is a situation that required remedying, but I’m not so sure I agree. I know how horrible it is to lose a pet, but there is no way I would have taken my cats blood to save the life of another pet. I give blood because I want to, I know lots of people who could give and choose not to, and that’s the key point - choice. My cat hated having blood tests, and because she was inherently better than any other cat (because she was mine) I wouldn’t have hurt her for the sake of other cats. Perhaps other pet owners will be more altruistic than me, but I rather doubt it.

Your cat is nearly as beautiful as mine!

I agree totally that you have to weigh the specific needs of your own pet, because it certainly would traumatize some animals and that’s not conducive to their health.
That considered, though, one of my dogs donated blood to my other dog when she had cancer and was desperately in need of a blood transfusion. Later, we also got blood from an emergency clinic. JH--the dog who donated--was a bit groggy (because they tranquilized him) but otherwise unharmed. So, things being equal and knowing it wouldn’t hurt or bother my dogs I’d definitely donate to something like this.
My current dog would think it was an awesome deal because there would be people and a car trip and probably extra treats. But, again, not every dog or cat would feel this way and I’d never want to see pressure on people to donate when they didn’t want to or didn’t think their animals would tolerate it well.

Anybody know if you can choose to have kitteh give her own blood before an operation, just in case?
