And the prize for most inventive smuggler goes to…

...Jereme James of California for using his prosthetic leg to smuggle iguanas from Fiji into the US. Jereme is an inventive smuggler, but clearly not a very clever one, as he’s currently under arrest for illegally importing the protected animals. He wasn’t caught with the iguanas in his leg, he was busted by an undercover sting boasting about how much he’d sold them for, and when his home was searched more iguanas were found. The bright green Fiji Island Banded Iguana (Brachylophus fasciatus), is threatened with extinction, so he really shouldn’t have been lugging them around in his sweaty fake leg, but there probably isn’t much point putting him in prison. I think he should be given a hefty fine, which should then be donated to a scheme to protect the iguanas in Fiji from loonies like Jereme. But if they do throw the book at him, the one thing I really want to see is how the leg thing worked. Even though it’s definitely not on, it’s pretty inventive.

Followup:
I attended Jereme’s trial. The original indictment suggested Jereme smuggled the Fiji Island Banded Iguanas in his prosthetic leg. However, that possible explanation for how Jereme acquired the iguanas was not part of the prosecution case during the actual trial. The jury felt that the government was unable to prove the allegation that Jereme smuggled the iguanas from Fiji. He was found not guilty on that charge. However he was found guilty for possessing and for concealing the iguanas.
