Rachel Zurer

Rachel Zurer is a freelance writer and radio producer based in Oakland, California. She has an MFA in Creative Nonfiction writing from Goucher College, and hopes that will help her get somewhere worthwhile in this crazy world. Her as-yet unpublished thesis manuscript tells the story of an isolated community in central California wrestling with the realities of environmental change, include the influx of large-scale solar plants. Before deciding to pursue journalism, she worked as a science educator at the Utah Museum of Natural History. Before that, she built trails and killed weeds as an Americorps volunteer all over Wyoming and Utah. Her favorite things to write about are science and the environment. Rachel lives with her boyfriend Danny, a student of environmental law, and her cat Azuki, who was named after a bean. She enjoys running, yoga, backpacking, and cooking ridiculously elaborate vegan food. She hopes one day to be compared, in a favorable way, with John McPhee.
