Camille Mojica Rey is a freelance science writer living near San Jose, California with her scientist husband, Homero, and their three-year-old son, Gabriel. She is a graduate of the Science Communication Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She also holds a B.A. in biology from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley. In her past life, Mojica Rey studied evolutionary animal behavior. Her dissertation research focused on the live-bearing fish genus Brachyrahphis (relatives of guppies). These studies took her to Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama. During these trips, she found she was more fond of fiction than of fish sex. Thus began her journey from scientist to novelist. That road has included the intermediary step of science writing. As a journalist, Mojica Rey’s work has appeared in a wide variety of media outlets, ranging from Science magazine to National Public Radio’s LatinoUSA. She has worked for Latina magazine, the San Jose Mercury News, and UC San Francisco’s Public Affairs Office. Mojica Rey now specializes in health and medical science writing, especially for major academic medical centers. This work allows her the flexibility to raise a family and create a little pop culture of her own. She has completed her first novel (under a top-secret pseudonym), is working on getting it published and hopes to follow that up with a screenplay.
