Inspired by Matthew Bettelheim’s recent foray into the Darwin fish’s family tree here at Inkling we’ve decided it’s time for that family tree to get a little bigger and better. We’re having a competition to see who can come up with the next best Darwin fish design. So long as it cleverly incorporates that telltale fish profile, all ideas are game. Send us doodles, polished Illustrator files, graffiti art, whatever. We don’t care as long as it’s got an almond-shaped body, a tail and a certain wittiness.

E-mail submissions to by midnight April 16 PDT. Entries will be posted as they roll in. The winner will be announced to much fanfare on April 19, exactly 125 years after Charles Darwin died (or, if you prefer, met his Maker). The winning design will be considered by Ring of Fire Enterprises (makers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster decals) as their next emblem.

We are very proud to announce that the presiding judges will be Prophet Bobby Henderson of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Nona Williams, co-owner of Ring of Fire Enterprises, and science blogging powerhouse PZ Myers.

NOTE: Ring of Fire will produce winning entry only with artist’s express permission and if they deem it has enough commercial potential (nudge nudge; so comment away and increase the odds of this contest resulting in a commercial product).

#1 SCIENTOLOGY FISH
Seeing as Anna and I just moved into an office space mere buildings away from Vancouver’s Scientology stronghold, we thought we’d get things started with this very facetious Scientology fish. See, its tail is the dianetics triangle. For those who aren’t up on their L. Ron Hubbard, the four green stripes recall the four divisions of a human’s urge to survive.

#2 PACIFIC NORTHWEST TREE OCTOPUS
Matthew Bettelheim submitted a different kind of creature of the sea. It’s the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. To learn more about this beautiful creature, read his article on it here.

#3 REALITY FISH
Thomas Farmer got so fed up with the Truth eating the Darwin Fish stickers he decided to retaliate.

#4 NO PHISHING FISH
Laura Preble’s fish stands against those evil people that phish email addresses from unsupecting web surfers. “As a neat little double entendre, those who
find the band Phish to be yesterday’s fishwrap can also use this pesky pescado to declare their disdain for all things retro,” she writes us.

“Often credited as inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution during his travels abroad, the speciation of Darwin’s finches collected from the Galapagos Islands by Darwin and H.M.S. Beagle Captain Robert Fitzroy wasn’t realized until specimens were processed upon Darwin’s return to England by ornithologist John Gould who realized they were all species of ground finches rather than various species of grosbeaks, finches and blackbirds Darwin assumed them to be,” writes in Darwin Finch Fish designer Jerry Roe.

#112 TRUTHINESS FISH
Gregory Tomko explains where his fish’s design came from: “I decided that a good successor to the Darwin fish would be the Jesus Fish, but instead of saying “JESUS” in the middle it says “Truthiness” I feel this word originally created by Stephen Colbert and now recognized by Merriam-Websters Dictionary suits the basis for believing in Creationism, or Intelligent design, as these ideas are only wished to be true, but not actually.  Real truth on Evolution can be backed up by more than one’s wishes, or one’s gut… it can be backed up with Fact.”

1. truthiness (noun)
1 : “truth that comes from the gut, not books” (Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” October 2005)
2 : “the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true” (American Dialect Society, January 2006)

Hope that's ok. Thanks, Sarda

wow.. for a bunch of people who claim to be pretty smart (apparently smarter then God) you sound pretty stupid saying that you believe that the complex world we live in is a complete fluke. dumbass'...

Speaking of being an intelligent designer, the structure of your pages really reminds me of nytimes.com. it's too close to be a coincidence.

My favorite is 69, and not just because that was the year I was born in. :D

Seriously, I would by 68, 84, 98 or 99, or 121. Maybe some of the others if the art were professionally rendered.

I do already own the FMS fish, although I havent gotten around to putting it on my car.

fanny. nice

#97, love it

|| why give it merit by fighting so vehemently? ||
Because so many christians are so vehemently in favor of ID that they wish to have the rubbish taught in schools. I have to protect my childred from this nonesense.

|| i guess believing in evolution is a faith thing... ||
Wrong. Evolution is a theory, not a faith. It is a concept that can be used to make a prediction, tested by experimentation, witnessed via observation, and eventually verified by independent sources. It, much like the THEORY of gravity, actually explains what happens.

|| i think the problem you guys have is not with REAL christians. ||
Do you presume to represent all true christians, or to be their segratory agent? The fact is that the christian religions are many and varied. Simply because you might hold to a more scientifically apologetic belief system does not mean that you are not ultimately as deluded as the rest.

|| scientists should not allow faith in a god or lack of faith in a god to sway their opinions one way or the other. ||
Read the bible for plenty of great reasons that faith in a god might sway a religious scientist's opinion. For example, the bible's claim that god created man is not supported by science. This is in direct conflict with the concept of evolution.

|| the problem is that when science discovers something that refutes what many people THINK the bible tells them (it's actually tradition, not the text
itself) ||
Have you actually read the bible? It says that God made Adam out of dirt, that he lived for over 900 years, that Noah put two of each animal on a boat, that a snake talked to eve, that before the fall there was no death, that there is a place like hell, and that there is a being as ridiculous as god. Am I imagining that I read that?

|| when scientists make claims that god doesn't exist, they are making a mistake. ||
I agree. We should be agnostic to the same degree that we are agnostic toward unicorns. A negative cannot be proven, but that does NOT mean that the likelihood of a god's existence vs his non-existence are P/P. In fact the existence of a god is so unlikely as to be without merit. The fact that there are millions of believers does not ad merit to the idea or increase god's odds for existence.

|| a scientist should never take a stand on a problem when no way exists to prove them right or wrong. ||
Wrong. This is called theoretical science and has proven invaluable. These theories may one day be proven or dis-proven based on measurements we will be able to gather in the future. This is how we have come to understand atomic theory, gravity, light, time, and many others concepts that were once impossible to measure the way we can today.

|| Evolution neither proves or disproves the existence of god. ||
Agreed, but it does disprove verbatim adherence to biblical texts as an accurate way of perceiving the world. Perhaps this isn't your belief system, but it is for many.

you guys are a little too upset with the whole ID set, aren't you? if ID was such a dumb idea, why give it merit by fighting so vehemently?

i'm a christian and i think evolution is possible. the last i read, though, there was no proof. i guess believing in evolution is a faith thing...

i think the problem you guys have is not with REAL christians. it is with people who have been taught something their whole life and they believe it even though their religion doesn't even take a standpoint on the idea. there is NO SCIENCE in the Bible and scientists should not allow faith in a god or lack of faith in a god to sway their opinions one way or the other. the problem is that when science discovers something that refutes what many people THINK the bible tells them (it's actually tradition, not the text itself) those people resent science for proving them wrong. when scientists make claims that god doesn't exist, they are making a mistake. a scientist should never take a stand on a problem when no way exists to prove them right or wrong. if no data exists and no way to measure or test exists, it is the responsibility of science to have no opinion on the subject. evolution neither proves or disproves the existence of god. the existence of god neither proves nor disproves the theory of evolution.

Oh, it looks like today is the day we get judged! How exciting! Going over this site over the past few days has been quite a treat. There are many designs here that are just wonderfully clever, but wouldn't work on a car decal. When I was picking my personal favorites, I was also looking as to whether or not it could be put readibly on a decal.

So, here's my list of favorite entries, in the order that they're listed on the site.

#25 - Gold Fish
#43 - Church/State Fish
#44 - Bug
#46 - Jah
#68 - scientology fish
#79 - In the dark fish (nice design work on that one)
#89 - 42 Fish (my inner child was very pleased)
#106 - Proof fish - Awesome Photoshop skills there.
#139 - Merlin (Ren faire anyone?)
#146 - Clown Fish (Floppy Shoes FTW!)
#154 - Devolve Fish (Okay, this is so wonderfully 80's!)

And though they probably wouldn't work as decals, I'm in love with #29 - Jump the shark fish (Who didn't watch Happy Days?), and the laugh I got from #162 - "Fart Proudly".

Would be great to see Fish Taco (#126) on cars everywhere.

I love the angler fish (130) and the opposable thumbs up fish (150)!

I'm glad my submission went through. I'd also like to apologize to Ms. Casselman for the flood of email; I didn't read the comment thread here, so when the email bounced, I sent many copies. Sorry for the deluge of identical messages!

My email also bounced back, so here are my submissions just in case:
#1: Loch Ness fish:
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u263/lineque/lochnessfishbelieve.jpg

#2rasberrylum Pudding fish
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u263/lineque/plumpuddingfishcap.jpg

#3: Truthiness fish:
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u263/lineque/finaltruthyfish.jpg
Note: this was designed before the previous truthiness fish was posted, and my idea was to put "facts" in the gut of the fish, as suggested by the definition of truthiness. It later occurred to me that it would make more sense to put "truth" there instead, and what is supposed to be a fish stomach doesn't actually look like one, but I don't really have time to change it at this point.

Well, the email bounced back to me, so if it never got there, <a href=
"http://bankgothicoverload.com/images/devolve_joshmishell.jpg">please consider my entry as this link</a>.

I like all of them, but my favourites are, 11,20,37,55,81 and not least, 124 (yes, we are related, but what the hell - I think it's great!)

Thanks for including my entry.

Bruce, Beep Beep and Nick, Got your fish and attributions just fine. You should see your submissions on the page at this point.

Thanks so much for entering and sorry for the confusion!!!

There seems to be a trouble with email so my contribution to the competition can be found here.

Since the inbox is full, I'll just give a link. You can read more about him from my website...

Hmm... Email is getting backed up, and I'm not seeing any new entries. This is actually a very good sign. My hope is that it means the response to this contest is greater than anyone involved had expected. Wonderful! I can't wait to see the outcome.

Hmm.. actually without the fact fish, the truth fish pretty much proves the natural selection angle. The bearers are just too set in their ways to notice though.

Look at me not reading the comments. Doh! Nevermind. Thanks for the announcement, Anne.

I would love to submit my idea, but the email account is full. Is there any other way to submit entries?

...yeah.. I'd hope the truth fish doesn't strike a chord with me, lol.

The fact fish seems like the most natural progression. It's also the one I'd be most likely to buy and therefore , to me, the most marketable.

The truth fish seems like the most natural progression. It's also the one I'd be most likely to buy and therefore , to me, the most marketable.

(cont'd from previous)
But, of course, I understand that those "tails" are just the continuation of the double helix.

#100 DNA fish, to me, is the most plausible candidate for the future Darwin Fish.
It is simple (more easily manufactured); it resembles the original fishes better than #14 DNA Fish does, and it has a "tail" on both sides which might be interpreted to mean that the science of genetic evolution does not necessarily destroy the possibility of a grand design.

Did you get that last message?

Anne Casselman

I hope you get to read this. I tried to send you mail concerning who to attribute the "burp fish" to, but the mail keeps coming back.

So, just attribute it to Ms Beep.

My favorite is the "Fact" fish eating the "Truth" fish, but at a close second, I really like the "evolution in school" fish.

I must say that it still bothers me that anyone would even acknowledge the idea that religion is a "truth".

Another vote for the DNA fish and I agree drop the text or at least change it to TAGC, that way all your bases will be covered if someone hails your car thinking it's a taxi, ok, that was pretty lame.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

RE: my inbox. If you're getting emails saying your email to me has been bounced back, DO NOT WORRY: IT STILL COMES THROUGH REGARDLESS. Apologies for the confusion. Anne

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The school fish says everything that needs to be said without unnecessarily offending anyone. I would totally put in on the car I don't own right now. Next to that, the DNA fish is pretty clever.

the "42" fish - brilliant. now if you could just turn it into a (fish-shaped) mouse

then in a year or two you could bring out the "so long and thanks for all the fish" fish

nice going, Dr. Rice

My favorite on the list so far is 32. I feel it ties into the original meaning of the Darwin fish, but is a current update on what should be taught in our schools. Runner's Up 28, 43, 81, 86 & 87.

the email box is full .. I can't send you my submission

I'm torn between the adorable "cat-fish" (I am also a cat mommy) and the sly, on-topic, geeky inside-joke appropriateness of the Tiktaalik fish. I would probably buy both. smile

#51, Concious evolver fish; seconding comments from Zeev Kirsh above. Then, #37, Tiktaalik; so funny and appropos. Then, #42, Heisenberg; in-joke, so funny. Then #21, Wallace Fish. Can we get a meme going for Wallaceism? Then #66, the kid's Evolved Fish. Kinda funny.

Theda

#14 DNA Fish gets my vote.

http://www.immortalsofar.com/images/stinkfish.jpg

Way past its sell-by date!

i think the conscious evolver is a better response to the truth fish than all the depictions of "fact" fish eating or otherwise dominating the truth fish.

i vote 51 over all truth fish.
as for lamarck. who ever heard of a giraffe fish?

My entry has been acknowledged but not put up here, so here's a link instead: http://stereoroid.wordpress.com/files/2007/04/sashimi.jpg

Basically, "sashimi" is what happens to any Fish that lands in front of a Sushi chef..! (You can probably guess what the Kanji stands for.)

Try this.

Please.

Third try commenting, can't seem to ....

Yes please!

I'm having problems e-mailing the fis as well. Apparently the mailbox is full. Fish are posted on my blog instead at:
http://everything-more.blogspot.com/2007/04/fish.html
Go check it out, my son will get a big kick out of any comments.

I like #14 DNA FISH by Christopher Hallquist the best, I'm a Christian and a science teacher, not a Christian science teacher.

Where's a good website to buy some of these? Is there a Simpsons' three eyed fish?

Hello, I was having trouble getting my submission
through so I have put it online at:

http://fishfeet2007.blogspot.com/2007/04/darwin-fish-contest.html

Hope that's ok. Thanks, Sarda

I am personally in favor of Matthew's PNW Tree Octopus, followed closely by the dimetrodon.

So far, I like the DNA helix "fish" the most, but it would be better if it didn't have the "DNA" text.
If they printed that one, I would buy it.

popular contesxt: my entry bounced back twice, please clear your mailbox!

The No Delusions Fish is the best so far. I want one for my car.

Without a doubt, the Russell's Teapot Fish wins hands down. (Nice work, Quigley.) I'd slap that on my car in a minute...

I would like to establish priority in appreciating the Wallace fish.

Gone Fishing!

I have an entry in this comp but I would buy a King Tut fish and I vote for it!

Great King Tut fish! It's keeping an eye on you too!

DNA Fish kicks ass!
